I recently purchased a Canon 5D (taking advantage of the rebate) and I could not be happier. Having upgraded from a Digital Rebel XT, I don't think I truly realized the quality of pictures I am now taking (not to mention the fun I am having). The fact that I had read many posts that raved about the camera, read numerous articles and viewed wonderful pictures that others had taken, while helpful, does not come close to actually shooting with it. I have purchased the 70-200mm f/4L USM (a great value) and have the 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM from my Rebel XT. At this time, my goal is to rent some other lenses and research my next purchase. Recently, I rented the Canon 50mm f1.2L USM and the Canon 16-35mm f2.8L II USM. My desire is to have a nice wide lens and a great portrait lens, so I will continue to explore before diving in.
I am open to any suggestions and thoughts from the community and thank you in advance for your help.

I'd certainly look at the 17-40/4L and the 24-105/4L IS as options. The 24-105/4L IS in particular makes a very good "general purpose" lens on a 5D for everything from landscapes to portraits. The 17-40/4L also covers a pretty useful wideangle range and if you're shooting landscapes you'll rarely need anything faster than f4.
The "best" portrait lens would probably be the 85/1.2L, though the 85/1.8 isn't bad at all if your wallet doesn't like the price of the f1.2 version. The 50/1.2L is good, but a bit short for portrait work on a full frame camera like the 5D.

Having shot with the 50mm this long weekend, I fully understand your comment regarding portrait work on a FF camera. I will try for the 85mm this coming weekend. I have a feeling I'll be looking at that purchase soon.
As for the 17-40/4L and the 24-105/4L IS, this will be a tougher choice, as I enjoy shooting landscapes but would like to have a "general purpose" lens that will "live" on the camera body. The reason for this is I have read MANY complaints about dust - specifically with the 5D - so this has me concerned about changing lenses too frequently. I am not sure I am up to speed on all the cleaning techniques needed to remove the dust from the sensor, eye piece, etc. I just want to be careful... Am I being too cautious? I'm not sure why the 5D would be so vulnerable to dust issues - at least so much more than any other Canon bodies...

I don't think the 5D is more susceptible to dust, though I suppose if you have a sensor with an area that 2.56x that of the sensor in the EOS 40D/XSi then there's probably 2.56x the chance that you'll have a dust spot on it somewhere!
Removing dust from the sensor isn't a big deal, you just have to learn how to do it and use the right tools.
Dust on the miirror, viewfinder screen and in the eyepiece doesn't matter much since it doesn't affect the image. Dust in the lens is inevitable and has little or no effect on the image unless there's a totally unreasonable amount of it.

I'm looking forward to receiving my 5D kit this week.
I've already had 17-40 F/4 and 85 F/1.8.
It's surprising that Bob recommended the same three lenses on 5D!

I hope you continue to enjoy that new 5D, I just ordered a second one myself.
Concerning dust...here's the funny thing for me. when I first got my 5D I had alot of dust problems (that was 2 years ago). I had some other problems come up and sent it in to the shop to be worked on, while it was there, I had Canon clean the sensor. since I got it back I haven't had to clean it one time and that has been about a year ago already. It's almost like the static issue went away whether it was some sort of "new" sensor issue or they used some type of anti-static cleaner...I don't know, I just know I haven't had "dust issues" for the last year...

So far, so good on the dust issue... I just take the proper precautions in changing lenses and keeping things clean.
I can't put the camera down!
I hope to post some photos here in a bit, once I feel more confident in my work.
