Canon EOS 7D and a Service Contract

I am considering upgrading my 40D to a new 7D.  Amazon has the best price so far but they offer a 4 year service plan from N.E.W.  I have a similar plan on my HD TV but never considered it for an EOS SLR.  It is 109.99 for a 4 year plan.  The catch is that I would need to send the camera to their authorized repair facility.  I spoke to Canon and they do not offer a Canon branded extended service contract and should I ever need to use their service facilities, the same process applies:  Shipping the camera to Canon Directly.

Thoughts?  Is the extened 4 year service plan worth it.  My 40D is over 2 years old and it has had NO issues.....knock on wood.

It's insurance. You pay for car insurance, you pay for house insurance and you pay for health insurance.

Basically the warranty company thinks that, on average, you won't need any repairs. If they are wrong, they go out of business, so on average they are right. In that case they win.

However if anything does go wrong, it's likely to cost more than the insurance does, so in that case you win. It's pretty much like any insurance policy.

If you chose to go with an extended warranty plan then (a) Hope they don't go out of business before your camera breaks (that has happened with some companies) (b) Hope they do a good job of repairing whatever goes wrong (and hope that whatever goes wrong is covered by the warranty).

So it's a judgement call. On average it won't be worth it, but if you are an exception, it will!
