When Canon Dumps Salesmen's Samples

Hi Bob,
I have just noticed that Adorama and other authorized Canon dealers have started to offer the ef-s 5-17-55mm f2.8 is usm lenses as refurbished, as new condition at a reduced price.

My question is whether this indicates that Canon is planning to issue an improved version. Or, has it been their past-practice to churn the factory's demos?

Refurbs don't really indicate anything, other than the fact that Canon has a number of returned/repaired items that they want to get rid of. Refurbs don't indicate that a new model is imminent

The Adorama EF-S 17-55/2.8 IS Refurb is around $900, while a new, non refurb EF-S 17-55 is around $90 more ($990).

Thanks, Bob. I also noticed that the resellers offer a one year warranty rather than Canon. Is that typical or could it mean that Canon was not the company doing the refurb check?

You'd have to ask them who is doing the refurb. I think Canon only offers 90 days on refurbs, so a retailer's one year warranty might be a better deal anyway.

It's possible some refurbished units may be been refurbished by Canon, but imported from overseas ("grey market refurbs"). I'm noty sure what Canon USAs policy on refurbs is. They do sell some directly (though their prices aren't always great). I don't know what Items they sell through retailers these days.

The world of refurbished cameras and lenses is somewhat uncertain. Establishing who exactly did the refurbishment and in what country isn't always easy. Buy from a trusted vendor though and you should be OK.

I bought a refurbished Canon P&S last year (through Adorama if I recall correctly). I don't remember what the warranty was, but the camera looked perfect and is still working great.
