Thoughts on S90?
« on: April 07, 2010, 09:44:04 AM »

This is not an "EOS" question so I put it here..

Someone on another thread mentioned they had an S90.  Would anyone like to share their opinions on this camera?  It is a *little* late since I have one sitting in a box waiting for my wife's birthday, 8^), but I was interested in others thoughts.

I haven't used one but I have used and reviewed the G11 which uses the same sensor and very similar firmware. I was impressed with the G11 image quality and relatively low noise. I'd imaging the S90 would be similarly good, but in a smaller package. The only negative comments I've heard about it is that it's so small that the ergonomics aren't great because there's only a limited amount of space in which to include all the buttons, popup flash etc.!

My main camera is a 5DII.  I take it out when I'm going shooting, but I wanted to have something small but still with good image quality I could carry all the time for those unexpected opportunities (let's face it, no cell phone camera is good enough).  So I got the S90, and I've been happy with it.  I get good usable images under most circumstances--and if I weren't comparing the results to a DSLR, especially the 5DII with good lenses, I'd say it gives great images.  It's not really fair to compare the results with the 5DII, but of course the difference is enough that I do take the big dog out whenever I'm planning to shoot.  Still, the S90 gives results I'm happy with--it gives excellent quality for the size, and the small size means I have it with me when opportunity arises.  A G11 that'd give me more control or my 5DII which would give me more control, quality, and flexibility wouldn't be any good to me at all if they were sitting at home when opportunity hit.
