EXIF CODES
« on: August 04, 2008, 06:35:13 PM »

I'd appreciate some help.

I get a lot of "information" in my EXIF data that I simply don't understand....and I have no idea where to look!  For example, it will say Flash = 9 or Flash =16.  What do these mean?  Is there an EXIF document that explains them or is this something that is specific to my camera (Canon 40D). I can't find any information in the manuals.

EXIF isn't really a standard, though it's supposed to be. There are areas for manufacturer's proprietary codes that generic EXIF readers may misinterpret, so very often things can look a bit odd.

If you use something like Canon's DPP software, the interpretation of the codes should make sense.

The actual technical specification is here - http://www.exif.org/Exif2-2.PDF - but it's not a document you'll really want to try to read through!

You can try EXIFTOOL and EXIFREADER (both free programs) for extracting more from the EXIF data than Canon gives you with DPP

Many thanks.  I have read this "site" for some time and have found it very, very helpful.
