Unsharp Mask the new "standard" sharpening for 60D ?
« on: September 30, 2010, 08:37:32 AM »

Bob,

I am looking forward to read your 60D review when it is ready. I just wanted to mention something i discovered today. I don´t have the 60D but I have some raw-files and the latest version of DPP. When I opened the files the sharpening was automatically set to unsharp mask, not the "old" sharpening method. Strenght=3, Fineness=7, Threshold=3-9 depending on the ISO. This only applies to files from the 60D. Files from other models was using the "old" sharpening as a starting point.

It looks to me like Canon has taken a new approach with the 60D. I don´t know if they want to make it more consumer friendly or make the files look better? They certainly appear better. High "Threshold" values will even out noise (and details) at high iso´s and make files look better. It seems like DPP is analyzing the files and adjusting USM according to pre-set values.

I don´t mind this new approach but new users should be aware of it. This new sharpening is definitely more flexible than the older one but it takes some time to getting used to.

I'll have to take a look. I have a bunch of 60D RAW images that I took when in previewed a pre-production camera, but at that time the new version of DPP wasn't available so I haven't ever looked at them. I'll have to download the DPP update and see how it does.
