The Photography Pulitzer Prizes 2013

Two rebel soldiers in Syria guard their sniper’s nest in the Karmel Jabl neighborhood of Aleppo as light streams through more than a dozen holes made by bullets and shrapnel in the tin wall behind them. The dust from more than one hundred days of shelling, bombing and firefights hung in the air. Karmel Jabl is strategically important because of its proximity to the main road that separates several of the main battlegrounds in the city. Both sides (the Free Syria Army and the regime) rely heavily on snipers in a cat and mouse game along Aleppo’s frontlines.

I’d never really thought of beavers as dangerous until I read this…

A fisherman enjoying a fishing trip with his friends was savaged to death by a beaver. The man was at Lake Shestakov in Belarus with two friends when they spotted the aquatic mammal by the side of the road.As he inched towards the animal to take a picture, it pounced on him, sinking its sharp teeth into the mans thigh and severing a major artery

70MP full frame sensor from CMOSIS

Interesting new full frame 35mm sensor with 70MP is now commercially available. How long before we see something like it an a DSLR I wonder. While this sensor seems to be aimed more at industrial and scientific imaging than at the consumer camera market, it’s interesting to see that they also offer it in a monochrome version. Might be pretty interesting to see a monochrome DSLR with a sensor like this in it. No photo related performance details, but the 3.1 micron pixels have around 3x the area of the pixels in a high end digicam like the Powershot G15

The CHR70M is a high resolution CMOS image sensor with 10000 by 7096 pixels. The image array consists of 3.1μm x 3.1μm pinned diode pixels which share a number of transistors 2 pixels sharing. The image sensor has 8 analog outputs, each running at 30MHz. This results in a frame rate of 3fps at full resolution. Higher frame rates can be achieved in windowing mode or subsampling mode.

There’s a firmware update available for the Canon EOS 6D. It can be downloaded from the Canon website via the link below. This new firmware is v1.1.3 and according to Canon it “fixes a phenomenon in which the Date/Time/Zone settings screen appears on the LCD display, after the user has already configured these settings. The values for the Date/Time settings may reset if the backup functions which retain those values do not perform properly. Even if the camera does not exhibit this phenomenon currently, it may in the future. Accordingly, we recommend that you update the Firmware in the camera to version 1.1.3 as soon as possible”

Not too late for comet PanSTARRS

ps2

It’s not too late to photograph comet PanSTARRS with a normal camera lens. The image above was taken tonight (April 4th) using a Canon EF 300/4L lens along with an EOS 7D. This image is actually 16 shots stacked together, each shot being 1s at f4 with ISO set to ISO 6400. The comet was not visible to the naked eye and was quite difficult to see even in binoculars. However it  still photographed pretty well one the lens was pointed in the right direction!

Your Internet tax break days are done

New York State’s highest court today ruled that out-of-state online retailers charge state tax on New York State customers. Now it gets interesting since the 4-1 judgment by New York State’s Court of Appeals makes it all the more likely that the question will get an airing sooner, rather than later, in front of the U.S. Supreme Court.

50th Anniversary of the Instamatic (1963) | George Eastman House Blog

March 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of the Kodak Instamatic family of cameras. These cameras, featuring the instant-loading 126 (Kodapack) film cartridge, were by far the most successful of the time. Instamatics, like the Brownies they replaced, were the entrée cameras for a new generation of photographers.
