Interesting new digicam from Pentax-Ricoh, the GR. It’s the smallest camera with an APS-C sensor so far, and at price around $800 it’s among the least expensive APS-C sensor digicams.

GR|PENTAX RICOH IMAGING

(The GR)… is equipped with the compact, high-performance, GR LENS 18.3mm F2.8 (equivalent to 28mm in the 35mm format)…….Equipped with a high-sensitivity, wide dynamic range APS-C large-size CMOS sensor (Approx. 16.2 megapixels (camera effective pixels)). Improved shadow noise characteristics makes a routine high-sensitivity shooting at ISO 3200 possible (Max: ISO 25600)…

What are we losing in the Web’s images of suffering and schadenfreude?

An article well worth reading by Pulitzer prize winner Philip Kennicott

Facebook and Twitter have become vast, voyeuristic bazaars of freakishness and pain, inviting us to laugh at politicians having bad hair days, or a peasant carrying too many goats on the back of his motorbike.

Two rebel soldiers in Syria guard their sniper’s nest in the Karmel Jabl neighborhood of Aleppo as light streams through more than a dozen holes made by bullets and shrapnel in the tin wall behind them. The dust from more than one hundred days of shelling, bombing and firefights hung in the air. Karmel Jabl is strategically important because of its proximity to the main road that separates several of the main battlegrounds in the city. Both sides (the Free Syria Army and the regime) rely heavily on snipers in a cat and mouse game along Aleppo’s frontlines.

Beaver attacks and kills photographer

I’d never really thought of beavers as dangerous until I read this…

A fisherman enjoying a fishing trip with his friends was savaged to death by a beaver. The man was at Lake Shestakov in Belarus with two friends when they spotted the aquatic mammal by the side of the road.As he inched towards the animal to take a picture, it pounced on him, sinking its sharp teeth into the mans thigh and severing a major artery

70MP full frame sensor from CMOSIS

Interesting new full frame 35mm sensor with 70MP is now commercially available. How long before we see something like it an a DSLR I wonder. While this sensor seems to be aimed more at industrial and scientific imaging than at the consumer camera market, it’s interesting to see that they also offer it in a monochrome version. Might be pretty interesting to see a monochrome DSLR with a sensor like this in it. No photo related performance details, but the 3.1 micron pixels have around 3x the area of the pixels in a high end digicam like the Powershot G15

The CHR70M is a high resolution CMOS image sensor with 10000 by 7096 pixels. The image array consists of 3.1μm x 3.1μm pinned diode pixels which share a number of transistors 2 pixels sharing. The image sensor has 8 analog outputs, each running at 30MHz. This results in a frame rate of 3fps at full resolution. Higher frame rates can be achieved in windowing mode or subsampling mode.

There’s a firmware update available for the Canon EOS 6D. It can be downloaded from the Canon website via the link below. This new firmware is v1.1.3 and according to Canon it “fixes a phenomenon in which the Date/Time/Zone settings screen appears on the LCD display, after the user has already configured these settings. The values for the Date/Time settings may reset if the backup functions which retain those values do not perform properly. Even if the camera does not exhibit this phenomenon currently, it may in the future. Accordingly, we recommend that you update the Firmware in the camera to version 1.1.3 as soon as possible”
