Photojournalists shot in Afghanistan

During their long and decorated service in the world’s war zones, the AP’s Kathy Gannon and Anja Niedringhaus won many admirers among their colleagues. The two journalists were shot on Friday by an Afghan policeman while they sat in a car on an assignment near Khost, a province along the Pakistani border in eastern Afghanistan.

Calumet Photographic closes all U.S. Stores

Calumet Photographic announced Thursday that it has filed for bankruptcy and will immediately close its stores in the United States. UK and other European stores are not affected.

Their Facebook page and Website have both been taken offline. Though employees had an inking that all was not well, they were given no prior warning. All Calumet stores in the US are now closed.

Chapter 7 bankruptcy means that all business ceases immediately and their remaining stock will be liquidated.

Panasonic to reign in digital camera production next year

Panasonic Corporation will be halving its compact digital camera output next year. The total number of compact digital cameras released next year will be five, which is half of what the company released this year.

Panasonic expects this fiscal year that it will end up with 2 million less units sold, taking the overall total down to 4 million. This is expected to be the company’s second year in a row of digital camera business losses.

Seamless photography: Using mathematical models for image stitching

The approach used in this paper instead minimizes seam artifacts by smoothing the transition between the images. The mosaic image here is a weighted combination of the input images. This means the pixel values from the two overlapping images are combined using a weighted average for qualities such as exposure, local contrast, saturation, etc.
