Canon EOS 20D and EOS 10D - DifferencesThe following table summarizes the principle differences between the EOS 20D and EOS 10D. Most of the controls and operational features are essentially the same, though there are some small differences. For example both cameras cover ISO100 to ISO3200, both have the same selection of PIC (programmed) and creative modes, both have 12-bit sensor data. The effect of the DIGIC II processor speeds up most camera functions such as reducing turn-on time from 2s on the EOS 10D to 0.2s on the 20D and increasing the speed at which data can be written to a CF card. The CMOS sensor is a new design, with more effecient microlenses (similar to those found on the 1D Mark II's sensor) and lower noise. Canon claim that despite the smaller pixels of the EOS 20D's sensor, noise levels are in fact lower than those of the EOS 10D. In fact they claim that the EOS 20D at ISO 1600 shows no more noise than the EOS 10D at ISO 400. That's indeed remarkable if it's born out by actual tests on production cameras. Note: Test on actual cameras do show somewhat lower noise levels, espcially at higher ISO settings, though the improvement is less than Canon claims suggest.
