Those waiting for a rebate on a Canon EOS 5D are probably feeling frustrated by the lack of any announcement by Canon of a fall rebate program in the US. However there was an Canon EOS 5D rebate program announced "under the radar" which will give you $400 off an EOS 5D (making the final price around $1800) or $100 off the EOS 40D or Rebel XT/XTi. The only "catch" is that you must by a Canon PIXMA Pro9000 or Pro9500 printer at the same time (i.e. shown on the same receipt) and you must buy them from an authorized dealer (but both Amazon and Adorama, my "preferred vendors" are authorized dealers). In addition you get another $100 rebate on the printer for a total rebate of $500 on the 5D combo or $200 on the 40D/XT/XTi combo.
The program runs from October 14th 2007 to January 12th 2008.
The PIXMA Pro9000 and Pro9500 are excellent printers of course. However if you didn't really want one I suspect that you could sell it via eBay or some such similar outlet and still walk away with at least $300 in rebate savings. In fact the Pro 9000 is only $300 after the $100 rebate, so you'd still save $100 on a 5D even if you kept it and never used it!
For the EOS 40D/XT/XTi only, there is a similar package deal with the PIXMA MP610 and MP970 printers. $100 rebate on the camera if you buy both at the same time from the same store. Adorama have an additional $40 rebate on the printers.

Though Amazon don't seem to have the rebate info posted on all their product pages yet, they are an authorized vendor for this program. A full list of vendors can be found here: http://canon.rebatestatus.com/configurations/CANON/storelist.aspx
Remember, both items have to be bought at the same time from the same store and must appear together on the invoice. Read the terms and conditions for the rebates carefully to make sure that you quality. The items must be genuine Canon USA items (not grey market imports).
