Pentax *ist DL Digital SLR
The Pentax *ist DL is a slighly smaller, slightly cheaper version of the Pentax *ist DS which was announced on June 1st 2005.
The anticipated release date is August 10th 2005. Most of the camera
remains the same as the DS, but there are some differences among which are:
- The pentaprism is replaced by a pentamirror, giving a somewhat smaller
viewfinder (now 0.85x)
- The LCD is larger (2.5")
- The DL has 3 AF zones (the DS has 11)
- The buffer is now 5/3 (Jpeg/Raw) [vs. 8/5 for the DS]
- The DL has an auto ISO model
- The DL is 7% lighter (ca. 565g vs. 605g)
- The DL is about 12% cheaper (ca. $700 vs. ca. $800)
- The DL has no high speed flash sync
To me it looks like the size and weight (and cost) aren't that much less, but you do lose the large viewfinder
which sets the *ist D and DS apart from most of the other DLSRs selling at under $1000 (or even under $1500). You
also lose 8 AF zones and get a smaller buffer. I think I'd be tempted to stick the *ist DS if I were in the
market for a Pentax DSLR at under $1000. Your mileage may differ of course!
According to Pentax, the DL features the following:
- Simple, accessible operation, from the multi-function four-way controller to the large,
easy-to-use mode dial, all switches and dials are efficiently and functionally positioned.
- Compact design with high-rigidity stainless-steel chassis Body measures just 4.9 x 3.6 x
2.6 inches.
- Large 2.5-inch LCD monitor remains easy to view, even on sunny days. Power saving mode
extends battery life.
- 6.1 megapixel CCD and sophisticated 16-segment multi-pattern metering delivers
outstanding image reproduction.
- Convenient SD media Card storage and High Speed USB 2.0 data transfer.
- Versatile multi-source power supply operates on AA batteries, 2CR-V3 lithium batteries,
or optional AC adapter.
