One advantage of CompactFlash memory cards has always been that the fastest CF cards have been faster than the fastest SD(HC) cards. While this is still true, SDHC cards are catching up! SanDisk have announced their Extreme III 30MB/s edition series of SDHC cards with read/write speeds of up to 30MB/s. The fastest CF cards currently are capable of operation at up to 45MB/s. Of course you have to have a device (camera or card reader) which matches the speed of these cards in order to obtain high speeds. Not all cameras can (in fact most can't), though the new Nikon D90 DSLR can.
Note that the "regular" SanDisk Extreme III cards are 20MB/s (above right). The new cards as marked as "30MB/s edition" (above left). The new extreme III 30mB/s edition cards are expected to be available in September. The "suggested" prices are $64.99 for the 4GB card, $109.99 for the 8GB card, and $179.99 for the 16GB card.
