The EF 50/1.8 II is Canon's least expensive lens - and it's a fast prime! Though the build quality leaves something to be desired, the optics are good and this is a sharp lens, especially if stopped down slightly. Even wide open the sharpness is good and I have no hesitation shooting it wide open for portrait work. In fact it makes an excellent portrait lens on a crop sensor camera, giving a field of view equal to that of an 80mm lens on full frame (a classic portrait lens look).
The downside of the lens is its all plastic construction (including the lens mount) and its somewhat slow and noisy AF motor, but it's worth putting up with those for a sharp, fast lens that only costs around $100.

Comments | Canon's lowest cost prime lens. The cost is kept down by all plastic construction (including the lens mount) and a very basic manual focus system with no distance scale. However the optics are quite good and the EF50/1.8 II probably offers the "bets bang for the buck" in the EOS lens lineup! |
