The EF 10-22/3.5-4.5 is the crop sensor equivalent of a 16-35 zoom on a full frame camera, i.e. it qualifies as a superwide zoom. Optically it's very good and distortion is low for such a superwide zoom. Superwide lenses can be difficult to use effectively, but they have application in "near-far" landscapes with detail in both the foreground and background and for shooting in small indoor spaces where you can't back away from your subject. This would include Real Estate and Car Interior type shots.
Vignetting is fairly noticable with the lens wide open, but it can be easily (and automatically) corrected in DPP if you shoot RAW and it can even be automatically corrected in-camera for JPEGs if you have an EOS body that supports peripheral illumination correction (Digic IV based cameras such as the 50D, 7D, 5D MkII, 1D MkIV). Overall sharpness is good, assisted by the use of three aspherical elements and 1 UD element (almost an "L" series lens forumula!).
The EF-S 10-22 USM pairs well with the EF 24-105/4L IS USM since most people will never miss the "missing" 23mm focal length! Here's a link to a full review of the EF-S 10-22/3.5-4.5 USM

Comments | Canon's widest lens for crop sensor DSLRs, equivalent to a 16-35 lens on full frame. Low distortion for such a wideangle, along with good sharpness and a USM focus motor make the EF-S 10-22/3.5-4.5 a very good choice for crop sensor camera owners who want to go wide. The 10-22 uses 3 aspheric elements and 1 UD element to minimize aberrations and maximize image quality. A full review of the EF-S 10-22 can be found HERE |
