Brief Review
The 24-70/2.8L is Canon's premium "wide to normal" zoom. It's very popular with wedding professions and photojournalists due to its high image quality and fast aperture. It's an ideal lens for indoor group shots and portraits and it has a circular 8-blade aperture for smoother out of focus backgrounds (better "bokeh"). Build quality is very good as would be expected from an "L" series lens and the USM AF is quite (another plus for weddings) and accurate. I suppose it's one "failing" is perhaps the lack of any Image Stabilization. For that reason, some prefer the similarly priced EF 24-105/4L IS USM which has IS and a wider zoom range but which is a full stop slower. However at comparable (wide) apertures, the 24-70/2.8 shows less vignetting than the 24-105/4 and at wider focal length settings and, at similar wide apertures, the 24-70/2.8 shows a little less chromatic aberration and somewhat sharper edges (full frame).
The 24-70/2.8L USM is weathersealed and is supplied with a lens hood (optimized for full frame of course).
