Canon has expanded its
current line of EF lenses with the introduction of the EF 28mm f/1.8
wide angle lens. The optical design incorporates a replica aspherical
lens to improve image quality and compactness and offers the shortest
minimum focusing distance of any lens in its class.
To block unwanted light, one lens group has a flare-cutting
diaphragm matching the image size and because the front lens group is
fixed, further adjustment of a circular polarizing filter after
focusing is not necessary.
Designed as a premier lens in the most popular wide angle fixed
focal length category, the EF 28mm f/1.8 USM's fast aperture enables
photographers to shoot under extreme lighting conditions, while
providing an opportunity for faster shutter speeds under normal
lighting conditions.
The optical design of this model includes a replica aspherical
lens. Canon has bypassed the expensive process of polishing glass to
create aspherical glass and replaced it with a special coating technique
which matches the optical quality of aspherical lenses. The result is
an extremely high quality lens at a lower cost than with traditional
manufacturing methods.
The aspherical design also makes the lens more compact -- less
than 2-1/4 inches long -- and significantly reduces spherical aberration
and sagittal flare. The lens design provides an extremely close
focusing distance of less than 10 inches, the shortest in its class
Unlike most conventional wide angle lenses, the front lens group
in the EF 28mm f/1.8 is fixed and does not rotate during focusing. As
a result, polarizing and special effects filters do not need to be
adjusted after focusing
The Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 wide angle lens weighs just 10.9 ounces
and measures 2-3/16 inches long.
